21/02/2011 to 25/02/2011 - Tokyo, Japan

Distribution and Business Practices in Japan (DBP) (mission)

The 13th “Distribution and Business Practices in Japan” (DBP) mission, organised by the EU-Japan Centre, took place in Tokyo from 21 to 25 February 2011.
13 participants from various sectors (Food & Beverage Industry, Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, Electronics, etc.), coming from 11 Member states, attended the training course.

The course’s objective was to inform about latest market trends and give at the same time a practical insight of ways into the Japanese market (distribution channels, general consumer situation, importance of customer service).

During the course, the participants were offered lectures such as “Japanese Consumer Markets”, “The Business Practice by Japanese Consumer Co-operatives” or “Selling to Japanese Consumers, Originality, Quality and Design”. Company visits represent an important part of the programme and representative managers of Japanese Consumers’ Cooperative Union, Ryohin Keikaku Co. Ltd., Marubeni Corporation and LaLa port SHIN MISATO offered insight into their market knowledge, distribution and marketing strategies here in Japan and overseas.

The participants gave a very positive feedback on this mission, as they highly appreciated the company visits and lectures, emphasizing that this course gave them new impetus and ideas either on how to take the first steps into the Japanese market or how to expand and review existing market entry and distribution strategies. Moreover, they gained a general perception of Japanese consumer needs.

Quotation of one participant:
“It was a great experience to attend the DBP, due to the diversity of training and its relevance to our objective in Japan market entry. Also we had great diversity of people across Europe attending the training which was a pleasure to meet and learn from their experience in Japan too” - Abol Chizari, Managing Director, Auriplex Ltd., Healthcare sector, UK
