Report
The European Business Council in Japan (EBC) and the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation offered a seminar on global and Japanese information security concerns.
The emergency of the Fukushima nuclear accident is yet to be put under control and the long-term impact on industry and public will require adequate responses. What are the consequences for the safety of the supply chain? How to make sure that products from Japan are as safe as alternatives from other regions? What are the legal implications of circulation of such products? What are the expectations from business partners and consumers overseas? These questions are not easy and these issues cannot be solved quickly. Measuring radiation dose rates at production facilities and at the ports are first measures only and not the solutions to cover possible pathways of contamination in the long run. Currently, some of the players in the European and particularly German industry express concerns whether all potentially affected supplies from Japan should only be given permission to be exported if they have been found to be radiation-free in a dependable and legally binding manner. How can the government and business in Japan respond to such demands? What can we learn from the European experience in development of the long-term radiation protection mechanisms?
Mr. Hikota kicked off the meeting by speaking about what types of official and unofficial import controls have been taken by the international community then talked about how Japanese companies are trying to deal with the situation. Since March 11 his office has been receiving many requests for advice from Japanese business on how to prove the safety of their products to their international partners.
Dr.Schmollack followed up by sharing his 20-year experience in radiation protection and 13-years in nuclear power safety in Germany and Europe to address these and other nuclear-safety related questions. He has been involved in various projects worldwide for licensing of nuclear facilities in the design, construction, operation and decommissioning stages. He advises various organizations and the German government on radiation protection guidelines and nuclear power safety.
