The world economy has grown stagnant since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, while factors contributing to uncertainty have increased. Moreover, compared to the traditional players, namely the industrialised areas of the EU, the U.S., and Japan, the Asian nations—in particular, the developing nations—led by China, have been gaining momentum, giving rise to greater multi-polarity on the world’s economic stage. Additionally, dramatic changes have also taken place in the Bretton Woods system.
As for Japan-EU relations, it is an undeniable fact that trade and investments are becoming increasingly rarefied. Though the Economic Integration Agreement (EIA) between Europe and Japan is currently under review, it is important to discuss the ways in which Japan-EU relations are to be and also to discuss about future relationship between Japan-EU within the contexts of these historical and geopolitical changes.
Against this backdrop, the purpose of this forum was to explore both the respective positions of Japan and the EU within the world economy and the ideal type of cooperation between the two. The forum also touched upon the current state of Japan-EU business relationships and provided an opportunity for experts from both Japan and EU to discuss and indicate the direction to be taken in regard to cooperation between the government and the business world toward reinforcing Japan-EU relations.
