JETRO

JETRO invited participants to the “JETRO-Ireland Technology Forum, Dublin 2009”. The forum was held on Wednesday 4th November, with contributions from 10 research institutes in Ireland and Northern Ireland and governmental organizations from respective countries. ICT, Energy and Environment and Life Science were the main focus areas in this forum, which included presentations introducing the research environment and activities in Ireland and Northern Ireland, exhibitions, one to one meetings and networking. Please see Annex 1 for details.

The Irish government has identified ICT, Energy and Environment, and Life Science as priority industries in their science and technology strategy. Despite the relatively small scale of the country, the government is strongly committed to promoting the development of sciences and technology and to deploying support programmes by providing large amounts of research funding. Numerous international companies in those prioritised sectors have already been in Ireland and undertaken collaborative research with local research institutes. As a member of the European Union, Irish research institutes have been actively participating in European collaborative research projects.

It was expected that this forum supported building a strong relationship between Europe–based Japanese companies, and Irish research institutes, and enabled Japanese companies to obtain the latest information about science and technology in Europe. The new relationship was also hope to advance collaborative researches and co-development of global standards.
