Japan’s Trade Strategy in the Asia-Pacific and Europe (seminar)

During his keynote address at this Seminar co-organised by the EU-Japan Centre and by the German Marshall Fund of the U.S., Dr Itoh explained why there has been an explosion in FTAs involving East Asia, why FTA networks are expanding, considered whether they were undermining the WTO and what implications they would have on the future trade regime. He ended by analysing why Japan was interested in joining the TPP. He then responded to questions and comments on a range of issues from whether the TPP could threaten the EU’s East Asian FTA strategy to whether TPP-inspired rules could affect the WTO and the level of interest in Japan for an FTA with the EU.

Dr. Itoh is President of Japan’s National Institute for Research Advancement (NIRA), a research institute and think tank that seeks to energise policy analysis and shape the policy debate in Japan. Dr. Itoh is also a Professor at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Economics and has been a member of several government committees. He is a specialist in the policy aspects of trade issues (notably trade policies, international trade regimes and foreign direct investment flows). Dr. Itoh is a graduate of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo. He has a Ph.D. in Economics from the Graduate School of Economics, University of Rochester, N.Y. |
