JAMA

The global automotive industry faces two enormous challenges: overcoming the economic crisis and addressing climate change. Emissions from road transport currently contribute around 16% of the CO2 produced today. Reducing CO2 through vehicle technologies, however, is very expensive and significant investment in new technologies will be necessary to reach these challenging targets in the mid and long-term. At the same time, the automotive industry is charged with the responsibility of being a catalyst for economic growth by creating jobs and enhancing innovation.

Without doubt the responsibility for building and shaping a low-carbon economy lies with all stakeholders. In particular, it is essential for the automotive industry to consider this and to incorporate it into the product cycle. With this in mind, we need to ask some serious questions: Which are the best practices? What is a realistic approach to creating a Low-Carbon Society for the global automotive industry? How much can, and should, the global automotive industry contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions? What form will the next set of innovations by the automotive industry take? How will an integrated approach work?

A dialogue between policy-makers from the EU, Japan, international organisations and specialised consultants helped formulate some answers to these questions, and also shed some light on the future for the global automotive industry.
