Both the EU and Japan see international standardisation for goods as a means of contributing to a promotion of better global trade. Companies also see standards as an essential part of their company strategy to guarantee their products on the market and to secure a competitive advantage on the global market. Environmental issues, in particular, have become increasingly important particularly in relation to health impacts, climate change, and to protecting energy and natural resources.

This seminar featured keynote speeches from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and from the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). The IEC is a major international standardisation body that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. CENELEC is officially responsible for standardisation in the electrotechnical field in Europe with close collaboration with the IEC as well as with its European members.

The seminar considered standardisation activities and achievements in the electrotechnical sector to date, and also addressed current worldwide situations in which imminent demands for international standardisation are emerging.
