The threats and risks of fraud in business (Seminar)
Although for most of us only heard of rather than experienced, fraud is universal as it exists on all continents and strikes all sectors of activity, from luxury goods to auto spare-parts including food and pharmaceuticals. Fraud is also a double-digit booming market feeding as many new fraudsters’ vocations as new specialists’ parades to counter them.
The objective of this seminar was to increase awareness on the importance, the manifestations and the liabilities induced by fraud to a large public, from the consumers we all are to brand-owners. But what is fraud? As the scope of the subject is immense we shall focus the seminar, without limiting - on the world of counterfeits. The speaker presented a typology of the existing kinds of counterfeits, exposed what remedies exist and were implemented on the most sensitive markets, and proposed recommendations to prevent fraud risks.
Last but not least, elaborated on the risks that some solutions designed against fraud may infringe upon individual rights and freedom, and included in this presentation the impact of activists’ groups.
This seminar was partly illustrated with some of the experiences of the speaker to fight counterfeits in the entertainment, the wine and the electronic security industries.
