10/12/2004 - Tokyo, Japan
Symposium - recent developments in the automotive supplier industry in Europe and Japan (Seminar)
This event was co-organized with the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) and the Industrial Investment Council of East Germany (IIC).
The globalization of the automotive industry has lead to developments in at least two fields: consolidation of the industry, and change in the ratio of value added.
Consolidation of the automotive industry seems to have reached a certain level of maturation ? with only two independent car makers left in Japan, or three in Germany. Furthermore, restructuring of the value chain takes place, and OEMs reduce the number of suppliers one the one hand, but strengthen ties with a certain number of key suppliers on the other. Both trends, of course, increase the pressure on the supplier industry: The globalization of the supplier industry is expected to lead to a consolidation as well, and the re-organization of the supply chain requires firms to decide upon investments. Re-location of the production to places with lower costs is on the agenda in a number of cases ? but it has to be asked if relocation (often even expensive because related with investment on the green field and additional costs for search and education) is necessary of unavoidable. With this respect, industrial cluster can play an important role.
This symposium aimed to investigate the recent developments in the automotive supplier industry in Japan and Europe (mainly Germany), to compare strategies and policies and to see if there are common of different solutions of the problems the industry faces in both regions.
