Allfinanz reform 1985 - 2015 -- remodelling the Japanese financial institutions (Seminar)

This seminar gave an updated overview of the current reform of the financial institutions public and private sectors - both where we are and where we are likely to be.

Japanese Allfinanz Reform closely parallels the German Finanzplatz Deutschland programmes and is a complex restructuring of Japanese financial institutions to :

1. regain competitiveness lost to the foreign players,
2. reweight towards market-based disintermediation, and
3. raise sector tax revenues that have collapsed.

Team Koizumi -- Koizumi, Takenaka, Yosano -- appears determined to accelerate the Reform, notably in the FILP agency public sector and, while this is unpopular with MoF, the attraction of higher tax revenues is proving to be irresistible. Among other things, attendees should come away with an understanding of just why the privatisation of Japan Post is so necessary, desirable and meaningful.
