23/04/2004 - Tokyo, Japan
The Japanese regions: a suitable case for direct investments? (Seminar)
This seminar presentation concentrated on the five topics as listed below, lasting approximately 1 hour, using extensive data tables that was distributed to participants:
1. FILP Reform
2. Allfinanz Reform
3. Local Government Reform
4. Regional Economy Indicators
5. Regional Bank Balance Sheet Indicators
The intention was to give an overview of the current reform of the financial institutions public and private - both where we are and where we are likely to be. The progress of the FILP Reform re public sector agencies and the Allfinanz Reform re the megabanks was reviewed briefly. The significant, but little reported regional banks was given special attention as regards Local Government Reform impacts, the state of the regional economies and balance sheet indicators.
It is considered that there are growing inward direct investment opportunities in the Japanese regions for EU companies interested in a manufacturing base in East Asia. The pressured regional banks attempting to strengthen their balance sheets are an ideal introductory route to their even more pressured borrowers that most probably include attractive direct investment targets.
