Mobile payments in Japan (Seminar)
After a relatively slow start, Japan has now become arguably the most advanced country in the world in terms of broadband Internet roll-out, mobile communications and mobile internet. Mobile payment (e. g. paying for goods and services by mobile phone), as well as mobile transactions (e.g. bank transfers and purchasing stocks and shares by mobile phone) have become an important segment of Japan's daily life infrastructure.
With the introduction of true flat-rate-all-you-can-eat mobile data subscriptions plans and the emergence of flat-fee mobile voice subscription plans, mobile carriers in Japan are forced to develop new business models. As a consequence Japan's mobile carriers accelerate the development of mobile payment systems. Japan is also the only country in the world with nationwide electronic cash, including e-cash applications for mobile phones.
This talk was based on a recent keynote presentation given to top managers in the global mobile communications industry. The seminar described the importance of mobile payments in Japan, why they matter, and how mobile payments change the face of entire segments of Japan's industry, such as the music industry for example, and daily life.
