EU-Japan Policy Seminar
Empowering EU-Japan Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation - Key programmes to facility EU-Japan Cooperation

Thursday 9 June 2016, Brussels

This seminar:

  • highlighted the current state of EU-Japan STI cooperation;
  • gave an overview of programmes that can facilitate EU-Japan STI cooperation;
  • featured presentations by three key Japanese research funding agencies on tools to advance cooperation with Europe;
  • and reported on the outcomes of the EU-funded JEUPISTE project.

The 23rd EU-Japan Summit (29 May 2015, Tokyo) endorsed a new EU-Japan Strategic Partnership in Research and Innovation. The joint vision on this partnership builds on the strong research ties in areas like ICT, materials and aeronautics and strengthens collaborations in health and medical research, environment, energy and high-energy physics. Various initiatives to advance cooperation have been launched since the signature of the EU-Japan Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement in 2009.

Since 2013, the FP7-funded JEUPISTE project (Japan-EU Partnership in Innovation, Science and Technology) has strengthened STI cooperation and provided information on opportunities for EU-Japan cooperation. One of the outcomes of the project is a report on joint Europe-Japan STI programmes and Japanese programmes that can be used in combination with European instruments such as Horizon 2020 in order to facilitate EU-Japan cooperation.

This event highlighted the current state of EU-Japan STI cooperation and reported on the outcomes of the JEUPISTE project and gave an overview of programmes that can facilitate EU-Japan STI cooperation.
