Internet of Things

 Latest update: May 2025

The number of lines for Internet of Things (IoT) is growing rapidly as the use of smartphones, tablets, and other devices continues to increase and Japan is a global leader when it comes to digital infrastructure, new technologies R&D and investment. The Japanese government expects that robotics and the automation of IoT could replace some of the traditional tasks in logistics, healthcare, maintenance, and asset management. Therefore it heavily promotes new wireless technologies for IoT, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), 5G and 6G. The shortage of workforce and the increasing sophistication of analytics tools, robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure is driving the IoT market in Japan. The market size for digital transformation-related solution services in Japan grew from 1,16 trillion yen in 2019 to 1,96 trillion yen in 2022, recording a steady annual growth rate of 19%. It is estimated to have reached 6,57 trillion yen in 2024. In addition to streamlining existing operations, such as digitizing physical data, digital transformation is beginning to be recognized for its diverse benefits, including the creation of new products and services and the transformation of company-wide processes leading to fundamental management reforms.
