At the High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change between the European Union and Japan, held in Brussels on the 26 March 2026, senior officials agreed to deepen their bilateral co-operation, working together towards achieving climate neutrality and tackling shared economic and geopolitical challenges.  In the context of the current crisis in the Gulf region, both sides acknowledged the importance of the clean energy transition that contributes not only to climate neutrality but also their respective security, independence and competitiveness.

The HANAMI project, the EU-Japan collaboration around HPC is delighted to announce the first HANAMI High-level Symposium, which will take place in Barcelona on January 13-15, 2025. This event will focus on EU-Japan Cooperation: Advancing High-Performance Computing for Solving Global Challenges.

The objective of the EuroHPC research project HANAMI is to support the implementation of the Japan-EU Digital Partnership in order to strengthen cooperation with Japan, addressing the priority domains, which are climate and weather modeling, and biomedical and materials science of the High-Performance Computing collaboration.

As the only mayor participating from Asia, Yokohama’s Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka promoted decarbonization initiatives and international collaboration at the Vatican Climate Summit organized by the Pontifical Council.

Climate change and its associated natural disasters pose significant financial risks to economies around the world. As a result, central banks are increasingly being called upon to integrate environmental issues into their policies.

In December this year, the Paris Agreement will be five years old.
