Technology Transfer Webinar 17: What can IP (patent, trademarks, copyrights) do for new technologies in the IoT?

What can IP (patent, trademarks, copyrights) do for new technologies in the IoT (Internet of Things)?

The advances and popularity of Internet technology have given rise to the new field of the Internet of Things (IoT), integrating different technologies such as sensor technology, mobile communication, cloud computing and big data analysis. Applications of the IoT are almost all-encompassing; including medical care, transportation, logistics, smart home appliances and property management. With the swift growth of IoT technology, people’s lifestyle and consumption habits are expected to change.

In terms of trends, OTA communications allow for millions of networked sensors to gather and aggregate big data in the cloud, where it can be made use of.  Chief Economist Yann Ménière of the EPO has said, “Data will be the main economic asset in this new environment.

Due to the somewhat unclear definition of IoT, there is a wide range in growth estimates. But it is expected to be huge. Customers are seeking end-to-end solutions, meaning that companies need to provide the complete stack for seamless interoperability, leading to M&A activity, IP and partnerships.

With such a large area of coverage, the IoT can seem difficult to pierce. We will provide insight and case law regarding these topics at our upcoming webinar on February 23, 2018 to assist European and Japanese entities.
