Workshop: Japanese Nanotech Cluster and Industry Landscape

October 09 2014

Tokyo

Nanotechnology – the science of the very small – is a field that is already changing the world in new applications and advanced materials. Constant developments and innovations are bringing nanotechnology into our daily lives, making it a game changing technology of the future.

Knowing that this is one of the important future technological pillars, Japan has been greatly emphasizing this field, and the government set it as one of the key future technologies similar to EU’s “key enabling technologies” in the Horizon 2020. Many Japanese companies have pioneered in this sector and many have become world leaders in various niche markets.

The presentation will include an overview of the structure and activities of the Nanotechnology sector in Japan. Being a major market, the presenter will point out the experiences of EU nanotechnology companies entering the Japanese market - their obstacles and accomplishments.

Opportunities for collaborations between EU and Japanese industry, research institutions and SMEs are possible through the Horizon 2020 funds and EU-Japan Centre’s programmes that will be outlined at the workshop. The outcome of the research is also an online tool, mapping the Japanese nanotechnology landscape, which can help with searching for information about activities, locations and contacts in this field. Following the presentation, an open discussion on the topic will be held.
