Export to Japan 12: EU Advantages - Textiles

February 10 2021

10-02-21 | 10:30 - 11:00 AM CET

Various EU products and services began to enjoy benefits from the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) which entered in force on 1 February 2019, and we are seeing a considerable increase of EU exports to Japan.  But yet many EU exporters, particularly small and medium-scaled enterprises (SMEs) perceive access to Japanese market difficult because of unfamiliar trade and business practices.

This is a series of online training which presents the latest market information available in 2020-21 and explain in practical terms the most important things that EU companies should know when exporting to Japan so that the benefits of free trade can become more widely available to EU exporters for the second year of the EU-Japan EPA.

What should you know when entering textile market in Japan?

Europe has a long tradition of textile and clothing manufacturing. By transforming structure, the EU textile and clothing industry still remains as a world market leader and maintains more than 30% of world trade share in textiles. The EU Single Market is an important market to consume EU textiles and also a reliable source of fibres and fabric to supply EU value-added finished textile and clothing to the world.

As for trade with Japan, the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) launched in February 2019 and provides trade advantages to EU textile industry over other global exporters. Japanese textile market is shifting to synthetic fibres to manufacture high-performance fabrics for connected industrial/technical sectors. Japanese clothing market is adding an upper-middle segment in between luxury and middle segments.

This webinar assists EU companies, in particular small- and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), in familiarising with Japanese textile market and increasing EU textile exports to Japan.
