Japan’s business culture has a modern surface, but is still based on a set of traditional values like harmony, respect and hierarchy.  A lack of understanding of these underlying patterns may result in misunderstanding and frustration. Apart from a general awareness of Japanese cultural patterns, specific knowledge of business practices  as well as appropriate communication skills are needed to master the challenges of Japan’s business world, which is strongly characterised by people orientation and implicit structures.
