Japan's PV (photovoltaic) sector is a dynamic industry driven by ambitious climate targets and technological innovation that focuses on expanding solar energy to reduce import dependency and meet energy demand, with a strong focus on perovskite solar cells, smart grids, energy storage, and even space-based solar power. The government is promoting private investment and introducing new obligations such as the solar power requirement in Tokyo to increase renewable energy to up to 50% by 2040.

Several subsidy systems as for example the feed-in tariff (FIT) combined with a Feed-in Premium (FIP) system FIT, the Japanese CO2 pricing system, and a wide range of additional political measures give a strong basis for new investments in the integration of PV power systems and grid expansion.

Foreign companies entering Japan’s solar market can establish operations through various structures—including sales agents, representative offices, branches, or full incorporation—PV components are distributed through a variety of specialized wholesalers. Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) strategy which refers to the transformation of the entire economic and social system creates strong opportunities for European SMEs in advanced PV, storage, smart-grid and next-generation energy technologies. Success on the Japanese market requires long-term commitment, strong local partnerships, and careful adaptation to Japan’s business culture.
