 Latest update: March 2026

The chemical sector is the second largest manufacturing sector in Japan, incorporating a wide range of subsectors from pharmaceutical products to synthetic resin production. After having recovered from the economic stagnation provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic, the industry faces increasing uncertainty in its business environment due to the rise in international conflicts and protectionism. Nevertheless, the industry signals its willingness to remain committed to sustainability goals, with carbon neutrality and circular economy goals through the promotion of green transformation, international cooperation, and digital implementation.
