About the Report
Japan is striving to lower its CO₂ emissions despite obstacles such as scarce domestic energy resources and a greater reliance on fossil fuels following the Fukushima nuclear accident. To achieve this, the country is increasing investments in renewable energy sources and other low-carbon technologies. As part of its commitment to carbon neutrality, Japan is also advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS), aiming to store between 120 and 240 million tonnes of CO₂ each year by 2050 while establishing large-scale commercial CCS projects by 2030.
The aim of this report is to provide an overview of the market for Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage technologies as a key component of Japan’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality. The report examines the current state of relevant technologies (as defined in chapter 2b), domestic and international applications, ongoing projects, and the applicable legal and regulatory framework. It concludes by assessing market opportunities and challenges and provides recommendations for European companies seeking to enter the Japanese market.
