Japan’s electricity system is at a critical juncture. For decades, it has relied heavily on imported fossil fuels, with nuclear power suppressed after the 2011 Fukushima disaster. Since then, renewables — particularly solar PV — have expanded rapidly (but recently slowing down), reaching over 85 GW of capacity by 2025. Yet the growth of renewable energy has also introduced volatility and curtailment. Grid operators in Kyushu, Hokkaido, and Tohoku have been forced to curtail solar generation on sunny, low-demand days, while evening peaks remain challenging. These dynamics have highlighted the need for flexibility resources. Energy storage, once considered peripheral, is now central to Japan’s energy transition.
